Why does the sound of gum chewing make me gag?

Is it just me or is the sound of someone chewing gum simply revolting? I’ve had a couple of instances recently when the distinctive smacking sound, sometimes accompanied by a pop, has made me want to gag. Sitting on a bus crawling down 5th Avenue, a girl a few seats away from me was clacking away. Clack, clack, clack. And those buses aren’t quiet. In a line at u-Haul, the girl behind me was engaged in a gum chewing frenzy – she seemed to be upset (later confirmed when she screamed across the room about her perceived poor service). All I can think about is saliva washing over a mangy bit of gum — but it’s the sound that really bothers me. I haven’t worked out why. Is it just me?
