We moved apartments the other day. We left the vibrant and busy Union Square for the Upper East Side with Central Park a mere 5 minutes walk away – perfect timing for summer. Our old apartment was in a full service building with a doorman, elevator and other amenities. Our new place is a 3 floor walk up. When it came to moving day, it was raining. We rented a truck and packed up our belongings. Even with a lift (sorry, elevator) and a parking spot right out the front, it took us 3 hours to shift everything into the van with Alex repacking the van after my poor packing. What can I say? I have no skills in this area. We then faced the prospect of unpacking the truck and carrying boxes and furniture up 3 flights of stairs. I don’t know how people do this for a living. It’s simply hard work. But then a small miracle occurred. Two men in a van pulled up next to our truck and asked if we wanted some help. For $40 each, they heaved our belongings into our new place, puffing and panting. It’s the best money we ever spent.
