Wherever you go in New York, you’re bound to hear an Australian accent. Aussies are everywhere. In my apartment block, on my floor alone are three Australians. Today, we visited the Chelsea Markets in the Meatpacking District. You can buy a meat pie, sausage roll and lamington from Aussie-owned ‘Tuck Shop’, and across the way in the bookstore, sits best-selling Australian authored book, ‘The Slap’ by Christos Tsiolkas. This book is well written and keeps you turning the page but I have to say, I hated all the characters. As for the Aussie invasion, I’m sure there many reasons why New York is such a magnet – the sense of possibility, the access, opportunity and feeling of being part of things. Australia is still home, though.
